I Will Not Abandon Bobi Wine!- Olivia Lutaaya Reaffirms Loyalty To NUP After Prison Release

National Unity Platform (NUP) supporter Olivia Lutaaya has reaffirmed her loyalty to party leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, following her release from prison. Speaking at the party headquarters in Kavule, she said she remained committed to NUP and had not agreed to abandon the party as a condition for regaining her freedom.

Addressing journalists on October 30, 2026, Lutaaya explained that her release came without conditions after she admitted to charges of unlawful drilling. She dismissed suggestions that she had been required to distance herself from the opposition party or its leadership before being released.

“I will not denounce my leader with whom we were on that day. I belong to the NUP and all the charges brought against me were about NUP,” she said, making it clear that her political position had not changed.

Lutaaya also appealed to authorities to release her co-accused who continue to deny the charges. She argued that some of the accused were not present during the activities that led to the case and therefore should not continue facing detention over the matter.

“We who were here admitted but those who weren’t have denied the charges and deserve to be out,” she said, calling for the release of those she believes were wrongly implicated.

The case relates to a parade held at NUP headquarters in Makerere-Kavule on February 12, 2025, to celebrate Bobi Wine’s birthday. Prosecutors alleged that participants carried out military-style drills without the required authorisation. Lutaaya, who was arrested in November 2025, initially denied the charges before later admitting to unlawful drilling.

During her remarks, she also questioned the prosecution of the group, pointing to reports about proposed military training for Senior Six students. She argued that drilling activities should not automatically be treated as a criminal offence, raising questions about how such activities are handled.

NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya welcomed her return in a social media post on October 30, 2026. He said Lutaaya had spent five years in detention at different times and described the charges against her as “trumped up”. Lutaaya had previously received a presidential pardon in November 2024 after pleading guilty in a separate military court case involving treachery and unlawful possession of ammunition.

Her release has renewed attention on the case involving NUP supporters and the party’s activities. While Lutaaya is now free, she has made it clear that her support for Bobi Wine and the opposition party remains unchanged, as she continues to call for the release of her co-accused.
