UPC says ‘campaign machine ready for Dokolo by-elections’

(Last Updated On: 15 February 2024)

Lira I Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), National Resistance Movement (NRM), Democratic Party (DP), National Unity Platform (NUP) and Uganda Peoples Congress (UPC) parties and independent aspirants are all in the race for Dokolo district by-elections in March 2024.

The political parties aforementioned already have their aspirants ahead of nominations by the Electoral Commission (EC) in the first week of March. For example, FDC has given the flag to Dr Rosemary Alwoc Ogwal.

She is in the race to replace her late mother, Cecilia Atim Ogwal.

Ogwal died aged 77 on January 18 in India. She was elected the district woman representative in 2007 and served until her death.

On Monday, February 12, the EC chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi released a detailed roadmap for the by-election of Dokolo district Woman Member of Parliament and a by-election for local councillors for Adagmon parish, woman councilor for Agoga parish in Kwera sub-county and sub-county councilor for Apenyang parish.

Ahead of the Day, UPC said Wednesday that the party is ready to compete in the Dokolo district by-elections. “We are going to field candidates for the district woman Member of Parliament, local government councils and special interest groups in Dokolo district.

“At the moment, the UPC national leadership is working hand in hand with the local party leadership to organize the Dokolo district conference that will produce the UPC flag bearers for all vacant elective positions as declared by the Independent Electoral Commission,” said Muzeyi Faizo, the party’s head of media and communications.

“As UPC, we believe that the party shall unveil and present strong flag bearers for nominations scheduled for 11th – 12th March 2024 and we are confident that they will deliver victory to UPC. In the meantime, we call upon all UPC local leadership and the entire membership in Dokolo district to give close attention and participate in all electoral activities leading to polling days for SIGs, MP and LGCs respectively,” he added.

Since the electoral program is very tight and the campaigning period allocated to candidates is very short, according to Faizo, UPC, he said encourages the party’s local leadership and members to start preparing the ground with immediate effect in line with the roadmap of the commission.

“This requires total vigilance, commitment, sacrifice, teamwork and organization on the side of the party. UPC campaign machine is ready for Dokolo by-elections and we are certain that victory will come home,” he stated.

It’s worth remembering that in mid-last year, UPC and NRM top leaders, Jimmy Akena and Dr Tanga Odoi exchanged bitter words during the polling day (byelection) to elect the new MP, Oyam North following the killing of Charles Okello Engola Macodowogo on May 2, 2023.
