Kotido GBV trend: 66 husbands beaten by wives in 2025

The police have expressed concern over the growing number of cases of domestic violence in Kotido district, more so against women and girls.

According to statistics from the Kotido Central Police Station, at least 473 women were abused physically in 2025, a figure police say has surpassed that of 2024 when about 300 women were assaulted.

The OC Child and Family Protection Unit, AIP Margaret Ajwang condemned the act as outdated, urging women to report all cases of GBV to allow the law to take its course.

She made these comments while presenting on abuses against women on Friday March 13, 2026, during the commemoration of the International Women’s Day for Kotido.

Joseph Orisa, the Assistant town clerk Kacheri, representing the CAO, called for shared planning at household level to avoid GBV. He revealed that 66 men were beaten by their wives in 2025.

In a joint statement by the NGOs, they reaffirmed their commitment to partnering with the government to empower women economically through livelihood support programs and essential interventions.

Sam Oyado, senior community development officer of Kotido district, says that much has not changed about gender based violence because of the different cultural norms.

For example, where women are considered to be inferior without any voice and whoever raises a voice is seen as a defiant woman.

He appeals to the different stakeholders to intensify measures aimed at curbing gender based violence.
