Parliamentary candidates’ nominations underway across Uganda

The Electoral Commission (EC) on Tuesday said it had finalised preparations for the nomination of candidates for the 2026 Parliamentary Elections, slated for Wednesday, 22 and Thursday, 23 October 2025.

According to EC Chairperson Justice Byabakama Mugenyi Simon, the nominations are to take place at district and city headquarters across the country, starting at 9:00am and ending at 5:00pm each day.

The exercise will cover directly-elected Members of Parliament, District Woman Representatives, and Members of Parliament representing Special Interest Groups (SIGs).

The EC confirmed on Tuesday that the nominations will be conducted for 353 constituencies, 146 districts and cities, and five seats each for Older Persons, Persons with Disabilities, Workers, and Youth Representatives.

However, the nomination for the UPDF representatives will be held later under Section 9 of the Parliamentary Elections Act.

Aspirants must be Ugandan citizens and registered voters. Each aspiring candidate must submit a duly filled nomination paper signed by two registered voters, a list of at least ten supporters from the constituency, a recent colour photograph, proof of payment of a non-refundable nomination fee of shs 3 million, and certified academic qualifications of at least Advanced Level or its equivalent.

Public officers seeking nomination must attach proof of resignation.

Justice Byabakama emphasised that the nomination fee should be paid through the URA online system to authorised banks and not to district or city accounts.

Aspirants who have already paid need not report to EC headquarters but should present their payment slips to their respective District Returning Officers for verification.

Aspirants using vehicles during nomination are restricted to a convoy of two vehicles, each carrying no more than ten people including the driver, and must display police-issued stickers.

Upon successful nomination, candidates intending to launch manifestos must conduct such meetings in compliance with traffic and public assembly laws.

Returning Officers will meet all nominated candidates from 24 to 27 October 2025 to harmonise campaign schedules, with official campaigns beginning on November 10, 2025 and ending on January 13, 2026.

The EC Chairperson further announced that polling for Presidential and Parliamentary Elections will be held on Thursday January 15, 2026, while elections for Special Interest Groups will take place between January 13 and February 9, 2026.

Justice Byabakama commended presidential candidates, their agents, the Uganda Police Force, and the media for the peaceful conduct of campaigns so far and urged all stakeholders to maintain peace, dignity, and mutual respect throughout the nomination and campaign period.

He reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to ensuring the nomination exercise is conducted with integrity, transparency, and professionalism to promote credible elections in Uganda.
