Lira—6, June 2020: Lira Regional Referral Hospital [LRRH] has discharged her first patient who has recovered from the novel coronavirus disease.
The recovered and discharged patient is a male Uganda truck driver, 34, and a resident Mukono.
He was among the first patients to be admitted at Lira Regional Referral Hospital’s Covid-19 treatment center weeks ago. He was on Saturday (today) discharged after two of his test results came negative, a confirmation showing he has fully recovered.
To the chagrin of the local populace, local leaders in Lira district did not show up for this high-sounding and a land-mark moment perhaps in the medical history of the pandemic for LRRH.
Dr Stephen Oboo, the director Lira Regional Referral Hospital who has provided commendable administration and able leadership was able to address the media and allowed a brief interview with the recovered patient.
“I am happy and excited that I have fully recovered, I want to appreciate the nurses and doctors at Lira Regional Referral Hospital for their professionalism and all the good treatment they accorded me,” a recovered patient told the media in Luganda.
Dr Obbo, meanwhile, said he was very happy that Lira Regional Referral Hospital has discharged her first patient who has fully recovered from the coronavirus disease. He added that: “Next week shall be discharging another patient.”
He lauded all the nurses and doctors who have put their lives at the front line to treat Covid-19 patients at the hospital treatment center and urged them to keep up the spirits despite some challenges.
Dr Obbo also assured them that the Ministry of Health will send in more health personnel to boost their capacity in handing the Covid-19 patients.
Lira Regional Referral Hospital treatment Center now has 21 Covid-19 patients undergoing treatment and is now full.
Meanwhile, two medics from Lira treatment centre have also tested positive for Covid-19, one is admitted at Mulago Specialised Hospital and the other at Entebbe Grade B Hospital and according to Dr Obbo. “They are responding to treatment and they are all in stable condition.”
In her two recent visits to Lira Regional Referral Hospital treatment center, Dr Jane Ruth Aceng, touted the efforts of the medical workers, encouraged them and equally threw a challenge, demanding they ensure that Lira does not become the first treatment center to register any death of Covid-19 in the country.
