Uganda, Zimbabwe agree to strengthen defence ties to tackle regional security threats

Kampala | Officials from Uganda’s national army, the UPDF, and Zimbabwe gathered for the annual bilateral security meeting to strengthen defence ties and address regional security challenges. 

The meeting took place at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs’ headquarters in Mbuya, Kampala.

Major General James Birungi, Chief of Defence Intelligence and Security, expressed optimism about the collaboration, emphasising the importance of coordinated efforts to address the region’s multifaceted and dynamic security challenges.

“It is my desire that these relations, which are built on strong historical and cultural bonds, continue to grow from strength to strength for our mutual benefit,” said Maj Gen Birungi.

Maj Gen Thomas Moyo, Chief of Staff-Defence Intelligence, Zimbabwe Defence Forces, shared similar sentiments, emphasising the importance of the meeting in promoting Pan-Africanism and fostering mutual respect among nations.

He was confident that the meeting would benefit both countries as they collaborated to combat security threats such as terrorism, human trafficking, smuggling, and illegal migration, among others.
