In 2024, tragedy struck at a church in Palabek Settlement Camp in Lamwo district when lightning hit during a service, injuring 18 worshippers and sending shockwaves through the community.
Kitgum District Water Officer Picho Willy said the district continues to work toward universal access to clean and safe water.
“We have received information that some people are bringing workers from Lango to work on their farmland, but they are not being paid as agreed,” ASP Agaba Moses, said.
According to district statistics, Kitgum has an estimated 81 to 83 percent safe water coverage overall, with roughly 89 percent access in rural areas.
The Uganda–South Sudan border, particularly in the Acholi sub-region, has remained vulnerable due to its vast and often unmonitored stretches, which make it easy for criminals to cross undetected.
Teenage mothers are at a higher risk of complications such as obstructed labour, anaemia, and even death during childbirth, a health official in Lamwo, said.
The mayor of Kitgum municipality, Richard Okwera, praised the procurement and technical teams for successfully securing a contractor.
“At the moment, the district is exploring alternative options, including the possible sale of some assets, to raise funds and clear the outstanding allowances,” CAO Chuna Moses Kapolon explained.
With a growing population and increasing demand for land, challenges such as delayed registrations, disputes, and encroachment have continued to hinder progress.

Councillors unanimously received the draft budget, paving the way for detailed scrutiny by sectoral committees before its final approval.
