Police in Jomvu, Mombasa County, Kenya, have reportedly detained a woman accused of preventing her Grade 6 daughter from sitting the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) over objections to the examination number assigned to the child.

The incident has raised concerns about the impact of parental decisions on children’s education.

According to reports, the woman objected to the number 666, which she allegedly considered satanic because of her religious beliefs.

Her objection reportedly escalated to the point where she prevented her daughter from leaving home to attend the national assessment.

The mother is accused of locking the girl inside their home in an attempt to stop her from sitting the examination. The alleged incident attracted the attention of authorities, who intervened to ensure that the pupil could access the assessment.

Jomvu Sub-County Police Commander Selinah Chirchir reportedly confirmed that officers rescued the child and escorted her to school to sit the examination.

The intervention was aimed at preventing the girl from missing an important academic assessment because of the disagreement.

The incident has drawn attention to the challenges that can arise when parents’ religious convictions conflict with their children’s educational needs.

While families have the right to hold and practise their beliefs, concerns arise when a child’s access to education is affected.

For a Grade 6 pupil, sitting the national assessment is an important part of the education journey. Missing such an examination could cause unnecessary distress and create additional difficulties for a child who has prepared to take part.

The case has also prompted discussion about the responsibility of parents to protect their children’s welfare and support their education.

Authorities’ reported intervention highlights the importance of ensuring that children are given the opportunity to participate in school activities without being unfairly prevented from doing so.

The full circumstances of the incident and any further action against the mother remain subject to confirmation from the relevant authorities.

Meanwhile, the case serves as a reminder of the need to balance personal beliefs with a child’s right to education and a fair opportunity to pursue their future.
