We Are Determined To Support Our Ethiopian Brothers In This Latest Conflict; Gen Muhoozi Pledges

The Observer newspaper,

Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has reportedly expressed willingness to support Ethiopia amid what he described as the country’s latest conflict, saying Uganda could deploy its military if Ethiopian leaders formally requested assistance.

In a post attributed to him on X, formerly Twitter, Muhoozi said Uganda was ready to stand with Ethiopia during the difficult period. His message suggested that military assistance could be considered if the Ethiopian leadership made an official request.

“We are determined to support our Ethiopian brothers in this latest conflict. If the Ethiopian leadership requests our assistance we will deploy the invincible UPDF,” Muhoozi reportedly wrote.

The statement has drawn attention because it refers to the possible deployment of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) beyond Uganda’s borders. Such a move would be a significant regional security development, depending on the circumstances and the nature of any request from Ethiopia.

Muhoozi described Ethiopians as Uganda’s brothers, using language that emphasised solidarity between the two countries. However, the post did not identify the specific conflict he was referring to or explain what type of support Uganda might provide.

The message also made clear that any deployment, according to the quoted statement, would depend on a request from Ethiopia’s leadership. The post did not announce that Ugandan troops had already been ordered to deploy or that a formal request had been received.

Ethiopia has experienced various security challenges in recent years, including armed conflict and tensions in different parts of the country. Without further details from Muhoozi or Ethiopian authorities, it remains unclear which particular situation prompted the statement.

The reported remarks may generate further discussion about regional security cooperation and Uganda’s potential role in responding to conflicts in neighbouring African countries. However, no confirmation of an official deployment or a formal request from Ethiopia was included in the information provided.
