Former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has received a major boost after police confirmed that she has been cleared in an investigation related to corruption allegations.

Police spokesperson ACP Kituuma Rusoke announced the development during a press briefing on Monday, saying investigations had reached a stage where Among had been exonerated.

Rusoke, however, noted that some official procedures still have to be completed before the matter is fully concluded.

“So far, what I can say is that she was exonerated, and there are due processes that will be followed because there was an investigation running,” Rusoke said.

He added that police would later provide more details regarding the next steps and how the investigation process would officially come to an end.

The announcement marks a significant turn in a matter that had attracted national attention and placed one of Uganda’s most powerful political figures under scrutiny.

Anita Among rose to prominence after becoming Deputy Speaker before taking over as Speaker of Uganda’s 11th Parliament in March 2022.

During her time as Speaker, she became one of the most influential figures in the country’s political landscape, commanding a strong presence both inside and outside Parliament.

Her challenges began after investigations were launched into allegations related to possible breaches of the Leadership Code Act.

The investigations followed complaints from lawyers and activists who questioned her wealth accumulation, conduct and possible violations of public leadership standards.

Reports indicated that investigators were examining allegations including corruption, illicit enrichment and abuse of office.

Among denied any wrongdoing and maintained that she had acted within the law throughout her public service career.

The situation later intensified after reports emerged that she had been placed under house arrest as authorities continued their inquiries.

The development generated widespread debate, with supporters defending her record while critics demanded accountability over the allegations.

The matter took another unexpected turn after reports emerged that President Yoweri Museveni had intervened and ordered her release from house arrest.

Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba later announced that President Museveni had decided to forgive Among and halt further action against her.

Following the announcement, Among expressed gratitude to President Museveni and Gen Muhoozi, describing the decision as an act of mercy.

She also praised Muhoozi for his handling of the situation and said she remained committed to serving the people of Bukedea as their Woman Member of Parliament.

The latest police confirmation that she has been cleared adds a new chapter to a controversy that had dominated political discussions for months.
