Kasese | Okere City in Adwari, Otuke district was on Friday September 27, 2024 recognised during the Celebrations to mark World Tourism Day held in Kasese.
Okere, Uganda’s fastest growing rural and futuristic city, has won the most prestigious award for best cultural tourism destination in the country.
This is a landmark and historic milestone for Okere City, the people of Otuke and Lango at large.
The City administration has promised to do even more in the coming days to make Okere City not only a center of excellence for cultural tourism, but also a learning hub.
Ojok Okello, the founder and CEO of Okere City, has been described as “visionary,” with the administration thanking “all people of good will for the support that has allowed us to win this great accolade.”
“The theme for this year’s World Tourism Day is peace and tourism. It wouldn’t have a more poignant theme for Okere City, a community still reeling from the legacies of a protracted war that destroyed our human dignity.
“But, like embers, we rise above one cultural song, dance, and investment at a time to demonstrate the true meaning of a relentless people power and unstoppable human spirit,” Ojok Okello said, as he received the award.

While presenting the award to Ojok Okello, Doreen Katusiime, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife, and Antiquities, praised Okere City for demonstrating innovative ways of empowering the local communities in Otuke to become more passionate and invested in their heritage and traditions, which are critical tenets of cultural tourism.

Okere was started in August 2019. Today, it’s a community where rural development, future aspirations and cultural connections are uplifted.
