The Lango sub-region is among the areas across the country recommended by the Office of the President, through Operation Wealth Creation (OWC), to benefit from the relief seeds.

This intervention comes in response to the recent drought that has triggered an acute hunger in some parts of the country, with a total of 487,700 kilograms of relief seeds allocated to Lango.

Speaking to tndNews, Uganda, on Saturday, August 15, 2026, the Resident District Commissioner of Dokolo, Barbara Akech, confirmed that Dokolo has already received 40,000 kilograms of hybrid maize seed under the OWC programme, out of the 41,000 kilograms expected.

She acknowledged that the remaining 1,000 kilograms is still pending. While noting that unfavourable weather conditions continue to challenge farmers, Akech stressed the need for strict adherence to the programme guidelines.

The RDC further challenged the supplier to deliver the bean seeds promptly to enable farmers to catch up with the ongoing planting season.

In response, a representative of Equator Seeds Limited pledged that the remaining bean seeds would be delivered to Dokolo district on Wednesday, August 19, 2026.

The representative also proposed using cooperatives previously supported under the Agricultural Cluster Development Project (ACDP) to organise farmers and prepare them for the programme.

Speaking during the handover ceremony on Thursday, August 13, 2026, the Dokolo District Coordinator for Operation Wealth Creation, Maj. (Rtd) Tobias Alele, said the government had observed that Northern Uganda continues to lag behind in agricultural productivity, while poverty levels remain high across the region.

He emphasised that this initiative is intended to increase production, improve household incomes, and create opportunities for farmers to break the cycle of poverty.

Maj. Alele explained that the seeds will be distributed to registered cooperatives and farmer groups, which will then bulk produce for potential linkage to markets, including the National Enterprise Corporation under the Ministry of Defence and other investors.

He also warned beneficiaries against selling government-supplied inputs, stating: “We shall move to ensure that our farmers benefit at the right time.”

Dokolo district LC5 chairperson, Peter Ogwang, urged technical staff to ensure that the programme benefits farmers based on their production capacity rather than individual interests.

Ogwang called for the identification of capable farmers across all 14 sub-counties and urged the production department to work closely with extension workers.

He also warned against corruption, describing it as one of the major obstacles to the country’s development.

The total seed relief package of 487,700 kilograms is broken down as follows: maize 405,000 kg, sunflower 1,000 kg, groundnuts 4,000 kg; rice 30,000 kg.

Beans 5,000 kg, soybeans 41,000 kg and sesame 1,000 kg. These varieties will be distributed to beneficiaries to mitigate the acute hunger triggered by the drought.

In the Lango sub-region, the distribution breakdown per district is as follows: Oyam district is set to receive 129,500 kg; Lira City, 83,500 kg; Lira district, 79,000 kg; Apac district, 49,000 kg; Dokolo district, 41,000 kg.

Kole and Alebtong districts will each receive 35,000 kg; Amolatar and Kwania districts will each receive 15,000 kg; and Otuke district will receive 5,000 kg.
