The Resident District Commissioner of Amolatar, Francis Okello, has officially launched the operations of the newly formed Landing Site and Sub-County Fisheries Management Committees.
The launch took place on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at the Amolatar district education hall.
The initiative aims to curb illegal fishing practices, boost local revenue, and ensure food security across the district.
Speaking at the launch, RDC Okello issued a stern warning against destructive fishing practices that deplete the lake’s resources.
He urged the committee members and fishermen to strictly adhere to the government regulations to restore fish stocks for income generation and household food security.
Okello emphasised that income from the Lake should be used constructively, especially to educate children, improve health standards at landing sites, and foster personal development.
The District Fisheries Officer (DFO), Anthony Otunga, noted that widespread illegal fishing must be eliminated to achieve wealth creation.
To support this, LC5 chairperson Moris Ogwal directed the DFO to immediately customise existing fisheries laws.
Ogwal proposed running radio awareness campaigns so that no fisherman breaks the law out of ignorance.
“Our fish in Amolatar is our greatest asset,” chairperson Ogwal stated. “We have lived with this Lake for long, but it has changed the lives of only a few. We must remove politics from the Lake and talk to fishermen like family members to protect it.”
Representing the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), the Principal Assistant Secretary (PAS) Susan Ayura Acio, challenged the newly appointed leaders to serve as role models.
She urged them to perform duties that leave a lasting positive legacy, focusing heavily on generating local revenue to drive district growth.
The District Community Development Officer, Vincent Otile, emphasised that strict enforcement is necessary because the government’s ultimate goal is to protect both its citizens and its natural resources.
The newly launched committees are now expected to take full charge of monitoring the Lake and managing landing sites immediately.
