Akena slams Museveni’s NRM government

Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) party president Jimmy Akena has sharply criticised the NRM government for what he describes “as misplaced national priorities.”

Akena also accuses the government of pouring resources into military and security operations while neglecting healthcare, education, and the everyday struggles of ordinary Ugandans.

Speaking at Uganda House in Kampala, Akena argued that despite increased public spending, millions of citizens continue to face crumbling services, rampant corruption, and rising public debt.

“The government’s priorities are misplaced,” Akena said. “We should be investing more in healthcare, education, and the basic welfare of our citizens.”

The former Lira City East Division MP, Akena, highlighted the dire state of public health facilities, where essential medicines are often unavailable, leaving children vulnerable to preventable diseases like malaria.

He also pointed to deteriorating school infrastructure, which he said denies many learners a chance at quality education.

The UPC leader’s remarks come in direct response to recent comments by President Yoweri Museveni in Parliament about Uganda’s political history.

Akena firmly defended his late father, former President Apollo Milton Obote, describing him as a leader who dedicated himself to building national institutions and upholding constitutional governance.

He pushed back against attempts to portray Obote’s tenure negatively, insisting that his legacy should be assessed within the proper historical context rather than through current political lenses.

Akena praised ongoing peace and stability efforts by various actors, but criticised the government for failing to adequately support and recognise those working toward national unity.

The UPC has repeatedly urged the government to re-prioritise social services, arguing that meaningful improvements in healthcare, education, and economic opportunities are essential for addressing Uganda’s challenges.
