The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party is ramping up efforts to resolve internal conflicts and reinforce party cohesion ahead of the 2026 general elections.
Following contentious primaries, the party has announced the establishment of a reconciliation committee tasked with harmonizing differences among members across the country.
Mathias Ssuubi Kiwanda, the NRM Director for Mobilisation, emphasized that while the primaries faced challenges, mechanisms have been implemented to ensure fairness and cohesion within the party.
The reconciliation committee is expected to complement the tribunal already handling petitions from aggrieved aspirants.
In parallel, the NRM’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) has been actively vetting candidates for various positions within the party.
Notably, former House Speaker Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga and current Speaker Anita Among have been endorsed by the CEC to contest for the position of Second National Vice Chairperson (female), setting the stage for a high-profile race.
Additionally, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is unopposed as National Chairman of NRM and presidential flagbearer, reaffirming his leadership role within the NRM.
The endorsement of Al-Hajji Moses Kigongo as the sole candidate for First National Vice Chairman further consolidates the CEC’s leadership structure.
The CEC’s decisions some say reflect the party’s commitment to maintaining unity and stability as it prepares for the upcoming elections.
The NRM’s strategic initiatives, including the formation of the reconciliation committee and the endorsement of candidates for key positions, underscore the party’s commitment to internal unity and preparedness for the upcoming electoral challenges.
