Veteran journalist and researcher Timothy Kalyegira has made a claim on the Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among.
Commenting on a thread on X, he claimed that Among, who is a frequent visitor at the Vatican, has ambitions to become Uganda’s head of state.
“I repeat: Anita Among has ambitions to become Uganda’s head of state.
“Those frequent Vatican trips seeking Papal blessings, advice (and protection), the mall-like home in Bukedea, the 300k to NRM’s 23,000 delegates, and the endless mobilising are part of her State House goal.”
What promoted his claims? On Wednesday, August 27, UBC TV, a state owned broadcaster, posted an excerpt of its interview with Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa who questioned the commercialization of CEC’s elections.
“Why would someone spend Sh.5B to sit in the CEC, yet the position is largely voluntary?” Deputy Speaker Tayebwa was quoted.
Commenting on the same, Duncan Abigaba, former Presidential Advisor for Research in the Office of the President, revealed: “In the 2nd Vice Chair race, Madam has paid every delegate UGX 300,000. UGX 300,000 X 23,000 delegates = UGX 6.9 BILLION.
“In any serious country, a public official who spends this much, would right now, be before the IGG or Anti—Corruption Court. But we are the Godforsaken land!”
