Police warn vandals after stealing UEDCL’s electric wires

Vandalism on key government infrastructures across the country continues.

Some vandals have evaded capture, while others have been arrested and charged.

The government has lost millions of shillings due to vandalism, and taxpayers are obligated to replace what was damaged.

According to the Uganda Police Force’s latest statement, this act continues.

Police said on Tuesday that they have noticed a pattern of vandalism across the country, with a focus on critical government infrastructure.

During the night of January 16-17, 2025, in Katanda 1 village, Katanda sub-county, Rubirizi district, suspected criminals vandalized and stole 120 meters of electrical wires from a three-phase power line, the police added.

“We coordinated with a team of electricians from UEDCL Katerera Branch to visit the site and assess the extent of the damage.

“Incidents that involve the vandalization of electric wires like the one we had in Rubirizi we suspect it involved trained persons (electricians).

“However, we wish to warn in advance persons who always front ignorance of the offence as their defence.

“These include transporters, buyers, those who provide storage to stolen items that you risk imprisonment for up to 12 years or a fine of 1billion shillings under the Electricity Amendment Act of 2022.”
