Bassajabalaba, Sheikh Mufti Mubajje feud angers NRM Muslim fraternity

As campaigns for various NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC) members nears the final bend, Uganda Muslim Supreme Council leadership advises NRM delegates not to vote for Dr. Hassan Basajjabalaba who is vying for the National Entrepreneurs League Chair.

The candid advice was given during Jumah Prayers held at Old Kampala Mosque on Friday, August, 8, 2025 with many Khatibs urging NRM Delegates not to vote for him.

The khatibs referenced past scandals, including the shs142 billion market compensation saga, forged court documents to avoid paying taxes, and land disputes linked to Muslim community property.

“This is not gossip, it is public record,” said Sheikh Ramathan Kakande of Mukono. “If we ignore history, we will repeat it. NRM will be handing over the Entrepreneurs League back to a man whose name only appears in the news when money is missing.”

After the sermon, worshippers gathered in small groups outside the mosque, many expressing support for the warning.

“We are grateful that our leaders have spoken plainly,” said Hajjat Aisha Namutebi, a businesswoman from Kawempe.

“We cannot keep elevating people who enrich only their families and leave the rest of us in poverty. Delegates should know that electing such a person is like signing a blank cheque for corruption.”

“When a religious body like UMSC openly warns against someone, it means the problem is not small,” added Hajji Yusuf Wamala, a trader from Nakasero. “NRM delegates must think twice. This is not about politics, it’s about morality.”

This, according to sources, originates from a personal vendetta that Basajjabalaba has with the current Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Mubajje.

For instance, on January 10, Bassajabalaba filed an application for an ex-perte interim order, which was heard and granted.

The orders restrained Mufti, his agents, employees of the UMSC, and associates from carrying out any activities of the council until the main case challenging the legality of the UMSC election conducted in December was disposed of.

Mubajje, however, appealed against this interim order and successfully won it at the High Court. This bad blood between the two has left the Muslim Community divided, with many pointing accusing fingers at Basajjabalaba for fomenting divisions for his personal gain.

The UMSC rightfully fears that Basajjabalaba’s ascend to a CEC position will give him leverage to fight the current Muslim leadership.
