Dr. Obote College (DOC) students have been advised to concentrate on science subjects, particularly Chemistry, as it offers significant employment opportunities.

This call aligns with the school’s core vision.

The advice came from Lira District aspiring Woman Member of Parliament, Grace Atim Ogwal, who is also an alumna (Old Girl) of the school.

Speaking to senior six students inside the laboratory on Thursday, June 26, 2025, Atim Ogwal encouraged them to focus on their studies, emphasizing Chemistry’s broad employment prospects within the country.

Vying for the Lira district woman MP seat under the UPC party, Atim cited major Ugandan organizations that employ chemists, such as Uganda Clays Ltd., Hima Cement in Tororo, Simba Cement, and pharmaceuticals among others.

She noted that these companies specifically recruit Chemistry graduates and urged students to value the subject highly throughout their academic studies.

Highlighting her personal experience, Atim, who studied Chemistry at A’level – stated that she has no regrets about pursuing a Chemistry-related course at Uganda Polytechnic Kyambogo (UPK), now Kyambogo University.

This path, she explained, enabled her to secure a rewarding career where she has worked her entire professional life.

Dr. Obote College’s deputy headteacher, Tom Ogwang, thanked Ogwal for delivering a powerful and encouraging message to their students.

She expressed confidence that her visit would be a key tool in motivating more students to pursue science subjects like Chemistry.

The OG also acknowledged the current headteacher, Rev. Dick Alengo, and his team for their significant efforts in improving the standards of education at the college.

She noted their collective work has enhanced the educational system. Dr. Obote College Boroboro is a government-aided school located in Lira City East division.

She further shared her broader vision of creating employment opportunities for residents of Lira district, Lango sub-region, and northern Uganda at large. She elaborated, stating she plans to achieve this by lobbying for the installation of Clay Production Machines within Lira District.

This initiative, she said, would meet the demand for clay products and generate jobs across Northern Uganda and West Nile.

Additionally, Ogwal informed students that she possesses extensive knowledge and over 25 years of experience in clay manufacturing.

Based on this expertise, she confirmed the existence of good quality clay within the Lango sub-region suitable for producing quality building materials, though it is found in specific spots.
