Police in the North Kyoga Region are investigating a case of malicious damage to property and robbery involving a police motor vehicle, registration number UP 4816, which was operating under cover registration UBK 380Q.
According to North Kyoga regional police PRO SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, the attack occurred on October 28, 2025, at approximately 1:00 p.m. along the Lira–Alebtong highway near Obot Primary School in Obot A village, Obot parish, Bar, in Lira district.
The complainant, SSP Isabirye Julius, attached to Criminal Investigations Headquarters and deployed for surveillance duties during an NUP presidential campaign rally, reported that he and his driver, Sgt. Muhungo Peter, was attacked by a group identified as NUP supporters.
The group was allegedly led by Geoffrey Unzima, also known as Tawa, and an unidentified accomplice.
The suspects, travelling in a motor vehicle registration number UAN 925Q and a greenish drone vehicle registration number UA 933AU, reportedly stopped and blocked the police vehicle.
They then proceeded to stab all four tyres with sharp metallic objects, seized the car key chip sensor, and stole a Dell laptop valued at approximately shs1.5 million, two 20-litre jerricans of diesel, and a bag of personal belongings, SP Okema said.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the attackers suspected the police vehicle was carrying a communication jammer that interfered with their online network.
The police vehicle had been observed following the NUP campaign trail through multiple districts, including Manafwa, Namisindwa, Tororo, Busia, Apac, Kwania, Kole, Lira Rural, and Lira City, before heading toward Alebtong district.
The attack left the police vehicle immobilised, requiring tyre replacements and a new key sensor system estimated to cost shs700,000.
A case of malicious damage and robbery has been registered at Bar Sub-county Police Station under SD Reference No. 07/28/10/2025.
NUP co-ordinator for Lango, Mawa Moses and Dr Kanabi Moses have been notified of the incident, although the former said he was not informed of anything by the police.
Fifteen suspects travelling in the greenish NUP drone vehicle have been apprehended, and the vehicle has been impounded.
Police say they are continuing efforts to locate and arrest Geoffrey Unzima and his unidentified accomplice, who remain at large, and to recover the stolen items.
On Tuesday night, security operatives invaded a hotel where NUP presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, aka Bobi Wine, and his team have been residing in search of key suspects.
