Kole: 10 candidates nominated on day one

On the first day of Parliamentary nominations across Uganda, Kole district successfully nominated 10 out of 13 prospective candidates for its two constituencies and district woman representative seat.

The nominations, conducted under the Electoral Commission’s nationwide schedule from October 22–23, proceeded smoothly across the Lango sub-region.

Kole District Returning Officer of the Electoral Commission Niwasiima Rhinny confirmed the completion of day one activities, stating that all 10 candidates were successfully nominated after a thorough verification of their academic documents and compliance with nomination requirements.

She reported that the process concluded peacefully, with no incidents involving candidates or their supporters.

Kole North Constituency incumbent MP Dr Samuel Opio Acuti, the NRM flag bearer, was also officially nominated .

Following his nomination, Dr Opio assured constituents of his continued commitment, highlighting his plan to launch his campaign next month. He has already begun engaging voters in Aboke, Okwero, and Alito sub-counties.

Dr Opio, who also serves as Uganda’s representative to the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, emphasized leveraging his position to attract both local and international development initiatives.

He cited a record shs15 billion in projects delivered during his term, including the procurement of three ambulances, vocational training for over 1,000 youth, and various community development programs.

He will face competition from UPC candidate Okello Sam Bilck and former Kole District Woman MP Judith Alyek, who entered the Kole North race after losing the NRM primaries for the woman representative seat to Sandra Aceng.

Alyek now faces voter scrutiny over her 10-year tenure in Parliament.

The incumbent Kole South UPC MP Peter Ocen, who has served for 10 years, was nominated alongside current Kole district LC5 chairperson Andrew Moses Awany who is running as an independent candidate.

Northern Youth MP Boniface Okot, the NRM flagbearer, also secured nomination, setting the stage for a three-way contest.

Three prominent candidates nominated for district woman MP representative seat were Joy Atim Ongom of UPC who lost to health minister Dr Jane Ruth Aceng in the 2021 Lira City woman MP race.

Joy Ruth Aceng, former Uganda Ambassador to Canada and Kole’s first woman MP is contesting as an independent after losing UPC primaries to Atim.

Sandra Aceng of NRM, who defeated Judith Alyek in the party primaries, urged voters to support President Museveni and all NRM candidates, expressing confidence in her victory

Dorothy Akech Loyce, an independent candidate who also lost to Sandra Aceng in the NRM primaries, advocated for younger, more energetic leadership.
