Celebrations broke out in Otuke County on Wednesday as incumbent Member of Parliament Paul Omara successfully completed his nomination process for the 2026 parliamentary elections.
Otuke District Returning Officer Nelson Ayo confirmed that Omara, also the NRM flagbearer, fulfilled all Electoral Commission requirements, including successful verification of his academic documents.
Ayo cautioned all nominated candidates to adhere to campaign regulations, emphasising that official campaigning may only begin on November 10, 2025. Any campaigning before this date is considered illegal under EC guidelines, he said.
MP Omara spoke after his nomination and highlighted his achievements during his four-year tenure.
Healthcare infrastructure
He boasts of the upgraded Bar Jobi Health Centre from Level III to Level IV, Alango Health Centre from Level II to Level III.
Omara said he secured funding for further developments at Okwang Health Centre III and Okwongo Health Centre III.
Agricultural support
He said he distributed over 20,000 hand hoes to individual households across the constituency.
On economic empowerment, MP Omara announced that he supported 24 SACCO groups with green jobs under the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development.
He provided chairs, tents, cooking utensils, and sewing machines to community groups.
Infrastructure development. Seeking another term in 2026, Omara announced plans for the construction of Lira-Aloi-Otuke-Abim-Kotido road, with tarmacking scheduled for the next financial year
Education advancement, he said the government of Uganda secured over USD200 million for schools’ rehabilitation and expansion in Otuke County. Targeted institutions include Okwang Secondary School, Okwang Technical School, Adwari Secondary School, and primary schools like Okere
Energy access
Initiated the next phase of rural electrification to cover underserved areas including Okere, Barocok, Okwang Technical School, and Barjobi Health Centre
Omara emphasised his commitment to continued development, stating, “I don’t want to see my people die. My vision is to improve education standards, address health challenges, and empower households economically to eradicate poverty.”
The MP urged voters to support President Yoweri Museveni and all NRM candidates in the upcoming elections, citing the party’s developmental programs such as the Parish Development Model (PDM).
He will face four other nominated candidates who might be a major threat in the race for his reelection bid. Maxwell Otim of National Unity Platform was nominated as were Ojok Okello, CEO of Okere City, who will be seeking MP mandate on Uganda People’s Congress ticket, Omara Richard of Democratic Front Party and Tonny Opio, independent.
