On June 24 at the NRM party’s electoral commission offices in Kampala, Jane Frances Acilo was duly nominated for the primary elections due next month.

She was nominated by Dr. Tanga Odoi, the chairperson of the party’s electoral commission. Jane is aspiring to represent the women of Oyam district in the 12th Parliament – and she could bring an end to the years of UPC dominance.

“On behalf of the NRM electoral commission, I have the honour to nominate Ms Jane Frances Acilo to contest for district woman Member of Parliament Oyam district,” Dr. Odoi announced.

Speaking after her nomination, she promised fresh ideas, and wealth creation across Oyam district. On leadership, and contesting for the seat long-held by a UPC member, Acilo said: “Leadership is supposed to change turns and it’s now NRM’s turn to change dominion over Oyam district and bring new ideas, some fresh ideas.

“What I am promising our people is to improve the livelihoods of the common man in Oyam district through agriculture.”

She also wants people to have a mindset shift in education, further promising to encourage the people of Oyam to be job creators and not seekers.

“I’ll not be stepping down and I’ll go all the way to Parliament,” she said when asked if she would step down for any candidate.

In recent days, two women who had shown interest to compete together with Acilo in NRM stepped down. All have offered to support her candidacy.

Excited delegation

Acilo’s nomination was a special one with over 40-member delegation from Oyam district traveling to Kampala to witness her get nominated.

The delegation included party structure leaders: two-two per sub-county in the district.

Speaking to a cheerful delegation on Monday evening in Kampala, she said: “You have started this journey with me. I know today you have got a friend, and I want us to walk together.”

“I want to thank you for standing with me. This is not an easy thing but we are walking it together,” she added.

“After the primary elections, I want to move to each sub-county and I will rely on you who are here,” she told the delegation on Monday evening.

This is the beginning of the many collaborations we are going to have, she promised.

Odongo Constantine, Minakulu sub-county Secretary for the elderly under the NRM, said he has seen a lot of things. “One is that everyone who came from Oyam district supports Jane Acilo and they are here to prove their love before the NRM electoral commission.

“We are going to do everything to ensure she holds the party flag this time.

I have accepted to go back and ensure she gets huge votes in Minakulu sub-county. I have been an NRM member since 1995, and she is development-oriented,” Constatine added.

Odongo Ali thanked Jane for coming to rescue Oyam district as the district woman MP. He said Jane’s manifesto can uplift the people of Oyam from poverty, education and health.

“The ideology of NRM and their performance can make people of Oyam to support Jane,” Ali said.

“Jane’s performance is very unique: she’s paying school fees for the children, giving maize seeds to the population of Oyam and Jane is the only person who can make it.”
