Records show rising motorcycle theft in Opit town council
By Daniel Ojara
Omoro | From October to November of this year, 13 bodabodas (motorcycles) were reported stolen by suspected motorcycle thieves in Opit town council, Omoro district.
Only one of the thirteen has been recovered, with the others still missing.
According to the report, these motorcycles are typically lost when owners pack them outside a drinking establishment or disco hall at night.
Another report indicates that the riders are attacked by suspected motorcycle thieves at night.
The most recent attack occurred last Friday, when a bodaboda man was hit on the head along the Opit-Palenga road.
He was left unconscious, and the thieves immediately stole his transportation. However, the motorcycle was recovered after two days in Odek trading center through a joint bodaboda operation.
Vincent Odong, chairperson of the Opit Town Council Youth Bodaboda Association, stated that some of their members ignore the advice they give them.
Those with loans, he said, work under pressure and at night to make enough money to service their loans.
“We normally caution members against operating after 10 p.m. to midnight, operating while intoxicated, and being cautious of the customers they transport at night.
“Some of our members take it for granted, and they are having problems,” Odong explained.
The Opit Association has over 200 active boda boda riders.
