Leaders commend Abdalla Anyuru’s family as Museveni supports and honors his legacy

Aber, Oyam | Archdeacon Alfred Okello Arum of Aber Archdeaconry in Oketobilo village, Akaka parish, Aber sub-county, Oyam district, on Saturday praised the family of the late Sam Bua Anyuru, son of the late Abdalla Anyuru, for instilling strong moral values that shaped him into a respected and patriotic citizen.

Speaking during the funeral service held in Oketobilo, the Archdeacon commended the deceased’s upbringing, saying the values he received from his parents contributed to his success and service to society.

He used the occasion to call on parents to emulate the example set by the Anyuru family by prioritising discipline, education, and responsible upbringing of children.

“Our children in the community have no proper morals. They steal from the widows and elders……they even no longer respect elders and their property,” Okello Arum said.

The Archdeacon also expressed concern over declining interest among some parents in educating their children, citing low enrolment of local learners at Abdalla Anyuru Memorial College, a secondary school established in honour of the late Abdalla Anyuru.

“We have Abdalla Anyuru Memorial College next to us here, but the biggest percentage of learners come from outside Aber. This is discouraging,” he said.

He added that most parents take their children to expensive schools and after failing to afford fees, children come back home and become thieves.

Meanwhile, Joseph Olet Magezi also known as “Mr Build” – the Awitong (clan leader) of Arakocola Yamyam, appreciated the efforts of veteran politician Beatrice Lagada and David Egwel for ensuring the repatriation of Sam Bua Anyuru’s remains from France to Uganda for a dignified burial at his ancestral home.

Magezi said Lagada and Egwel kept him informed throughout the process, from the arrival of the body at Entebbe International Airport to the final journey to Oyam.

“My children Lagada and Egwel kept me informed right from when the body landed at Entebbe up to Oyam,” he said.

He further applauded Egwel for coordinating sons and daughters of the Arakocola Yamyam clan living in Kampala and the diaspora whenever needs arise.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni – who he’s today because of the late Abdalla Anyuru, paid tribute to the late Bua and the wider Anyuru family, recognising their contribution to Uganda’s history and nation-building.

The President’s condolence message was delivered by the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Vice Chairperson for Northern Uganda and Senior Presidential Advisor, Denis Hamson Obua.

In his message, Museveni extended condolences to the Anyuru family, government, and the NRM fraternity, describing the family as one that holds a significant place in Uganda’s history.

“Mzee Anyuru was the one who recruited me into government service when I completed my studies at Dar es Salaam University,” President Museveni recalled.

The family patriarch, the late Mzee Abdalla Anyuru, who served as Chairperson of the Public Service Commission during the Obote I administration, Museveni said, was among prominent Ugandans who suffered extrajudicial killings during Idi Amin’s regime.

Museveni noted that the persecution of professionals and national leaders during the 1970s contributed to the weakening of Uganda’s institutions, including the civil service, military, and business sector.

He described the sacrifices of the Anyuru family as an important part of Uganda’s journey of resilience and recovery.

Denis Hamson Obua also delivered a shs10 million cash contribution from President Museveni towards the burial arrangements.

Sam Bua Anyuru, who fled Uganda to Ukraine, and later settled in France, died at 65 on June 7.
