Oyam: Aleka sub-county bans night bar operations
By Daniel Ojara
Oyam | Following a recent security meeting at Aleka sub-county headquarters in Oyam district, local leaders and community members have agreed to prohibit night bar operations after 10 p.m.
The ban will begin this weekend, on November 30.
The resolutions were issued in response to numerous cases of robbery, waylaying, and rape of women at night, most of which occurred in busy trading centers.
Leaders claim that because these centers have bars open around-the-clock, bad people use them as a place to hide.
In their report, more than ten cases of rape, robbery, and waylaying were reported in the Aleka trading center between August and October of this year.
According to reports from other sub-county trading centers, crime is primarily committed by young people who are idle. None have been arrested over any cases mentioned above.
George Abong, chairperson LC3 of Aleka and chairperson of the Aleka security team, stated that no bars or video halls will be permitted to operate after 10 p.m.
“Any bar owner who disobeys the orders will face arrest.”
The RDC-led district security team has ordered them to patrol at night with assistance from the Oyam Central Police Station, according to Abong.
Tenywa Ayubu, the Deputy Resident District Commissioner of Oyam who presided over the Aleka meeting, urged the community to always cooperate with security officers in the effective reporting of crime cases.
Meanwhile, Oyam District Police Commander Edison Muhangi urges the community to remain calm and allow security officers to perform their duties.
