Lira | Many Ugandans keep dying in road crashes across the country. Every day, road users lose their lives in crashes, according to Uganda Police statistics.
In Lira City, tndNews Denis Arao reports that on September 4, 2024, at around 15:45 p.m., a 49-year-old driver named Uzia Alex was involved in a tragic road crash.
Uzia, until his death, worked in the office of the Regional Intelligence Security Officer (RISO) for Lango sub-region as a driver. The incident that caused his death occurred near Jinja Camp on Juba Road in Lira City.
According to information obtained from the police, a Toyota Hilux with the registration number UG 4260C was parked at Jinja Camp.
Uzia Alex exited the vehicle and was standing next to it when he was struck by a yellow Nissan bus with the registration number UAH 848F.
According to North Kyoga Regional Police PRO SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, the bus was travelling from Lira City to Kamdini.
Uzia was severely injured in the collision and was immediately transported to the MidTown clinic, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival, according to SP Okema.
Wanade Twaha, the bus driver, later reported himself to the Lira City Central Police Station.
According to PRO Okema, law enforcement was notified, and the scene was investigated by Lira City’s Officer in Charge of Traffic, among other officers.
The deceased’s body was transferred to Lira Regional Referral Hospital’s mortuary on Wednesday for a postmortem examination.
The identified vehicles were taken to CPS, and the bus will be inspected.
Twaha is currently in police custody while investigations continue.
SP Okema also stated that preliminary findings indicate that the crash was caused by the bus driver’s careless driving.
