Kampala|Belgium is one of the countries Uganda has strong bilateral ties with. Belgium’s government continues to be generous to Uganda in areas such as education, defence, and refugee assistance.
Belgium pledged financial and technical support to Uganda’s public universities in April 2024 through its ambassador to Uganda, Hugues Chantry.
In what the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs described as “a significant meeting with the Belgian Ambassador to Uganda,” Ambassador Hugues was hosted by Uganda’s Minister of Defence and Veterans Affairs, Jacob Marksons Oboth Oboth, with the support appearing to continue for years to come.
The meeting was held on September 5 at the Ministry’s headquarters in Mbuya, Kampala.
The statement states that strengthening the two countries’ current bilateral ties—Uganda and Belgium—was the main goal of the meeting.
“Ambassador Chantry expressed his admiration for President Museveni’s stewardship in stabilising Uganda and championing the Pan-African cause within the region.
“He praised the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) for its invaluable contributions in restoring peace and stability in Somalia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.”
“Thanks for the good job you’re doing in the region to restore peace and stability,” H.E Hugues Chantry asserted.
Minister Oboth acknowledged Belgium’s commitment to Uganda’s development agenda and promised to continue collaborating with Belgium in areas other than security.
He added that the cordial exchange demonstrated both nations’ shared determination to strengthen their strategic partnership.
