Who to blame if fireworks are displayed in your town

Ahead of December 31, security chiefs – both at regional and national levels have said no to fireworks displays.

Oyam – December 29, 2021: Crossing over to New Year 2022 will be exceedingly strange to many who are used to the nightly lifestyles of previous years.

Why? Because of Covid-19 and the emergence of the Omicron variant, for example, Uganda still has guidelines put in place to help curb the spread of the virus.

Bars, casinos and schools are some of the public places still locked up to now.

Strangely, while government thinks all bars and nightclubs are closed as it instructed, almost every town in the country has some bars operating “normally” as security watches.

Now, ahead of the New Year crossover on December 31, security chiefs – both at regional and national levels have said no to fireworks displays.

Addressing the media in Lira City last week, ASP Jimmy Patrick Okema, PRO North Kyoga Region (NKR) Police, said the national tasks force ruled it out because fireworks gather people together, and it will be an avenue for the increase of COVID-19.

“Any request made by hotel management will not be sanctioned,” he added.

On Wednesday, we asked Okema again, about possible defiance by some business owners in Lira City.

He replied: “There is no supplier in Uganda who doesn’t know the procedure of acquiring fireworks, therefore, where will they get the fireworks from?”

The NKR PRO added, “It’s the supplier to request by writing to IGP. However, as you have made it clear… fireworks display has been banned in Uganda. So, my question is where they will acquire it from.”

“Obviously, they will be arrested,” he told TND News.
