Lira, April 15, 2022: Lira Grade One Magistrate court has committed to the High Court a former journalist with the Vision Group.

Jaspher Awio, 29, has been remanded to Lira government prison on charges of murdering his ex-girlfriend.

Awio worked as a reporter for the defunct Lira-based weekly local newspaper; Rupiny under the vision group.

He is a key suspect after his role in the murder of his ex-girlfriend Monica Amongi, 25, whose decomposing body was recovered from her rented house two days after she was reportedly murdered.

It’s alleged that Awio slot his ex-lovers’ throat before cutting off her hands, a crime he later reportedly confessed to police at Lira City West central police station.

He confessed to the crime after realizing that his former lover had fallen in love with another man after their separation in August 2021.

At the time, their relationship was sour with the endless misunderstanding that could not enable them to continue living together.

Awio is said to have made unsuccessful attempts to recommence their relationship before killing the lady.

Later, a decomposing body of Amongi was found in her house on April 2, 2022, at Anai Ober cell, Anai ward in Lira City West Division.

A few days later, Awio, who had disappeared, reappeared and offered himself to Lira City West police station confessing to the crime.

During his earliest appearance in court on Thursday, April 14, 2022, nearly two weeks after he handed himself into the police, the Chief State Prosecutor Peter Amalu, told the court that the accused’s commitment papers were ready.

“Your Lordship this case is coming up for mention though the investigation is complete and we are ready to commit the accused to the high court and the commitment papers are ready too,” he said.

While presiding over the matter, His Worship William Jonathan Wamimbi, the Grade One magistrate said: “This court does not have jurisdiction but you are only attending this court so that you know the charges chosen against you.”

Awio was committed to the High Court where he can take a plea on a murder charge which is levied against him.

“The state has completed investigations in this case you are hereby committed for trial in the high court in the next hearing and also hereby remanded to prison,” Wamimbi presided.
