Tooro Kingdom has launched a major fundraising campaign seeking Shs925 million to support preparations for the coronation of the new Omukama, Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I, scheduled for September 29, 2026.

The coronation organising committee has appealed to the people of Tooro, friends of the kingdom and well-wishers across Uganda and beyond to contribute towards making the historic ceremony successful.

Msgr Isaiah Mayombo, the chairperson of the organising committee, said preparations for the coronation are progressing well and called upon supporters to play a role in the celebrations.

He said the event will bring together people from different backgrounds, including cultural leaders, political leaders, religious leaders, business communities and other guests who will gather to witness the installation of the new king.

The head of the finance committee, Alex Ruhunda, said an official account has been opened at Centenary Bank to receive financial contributions towards the coronation activities. He added that members of the public can also support the preparations through mobile money platforms.

Richard Rwabuhinga, a member of the organising committee, revealed that President Yoweri Museveni is expected to attend the ceremony as the chief guest. Invitations have also been extended to cultural leaders from Uganda and other countries, government officials, business leaders, academics and members of the public.

The traditional coronation rituals will begin on the night of September 28, when King-elect Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I will leave Rwengoma Palace in a special procession heading to Karuziika Palace through Mugabante, the main entrance of the royal palace.

According to the organising committee, the king will participate in traditional rituals, including a symbolic mock battle at the palace entrance where he is expected to emerge victorious before entering the palace and taking his place on the throne.

Other cultural ceremonies will also be conducted inside Karuziika Palace, including the symbolic restoration of the royal drums that were turned upside down following the death of the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.

The main coronation programme on September 29 will begin with a church service at St John’s Cathedral in Fort Portal before the official coronation ceremony takes place at Karuziika Palace.

Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I was selected by the Babiito ruling clan to succeed the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who passed away in August at the age of 34.

The coronation marks a new chapter in the history of Tooro Kingdom as subjects prepare to welcome their new cultural leader and celebrate the continuation of the kingdom’s traditions and heritage.
