Finance Bill protests: Kenya told to compensate Uganda

The Ugandan Parliament has directed the government to seek compensation from the Kenyan government.

While presenting a report on the 2025/26 Budget Framework Paper, Pian County MP Achia Remigio expressed the committee’s desire for Uganda to pursue Kenya.

Kenyans protested the Finance Bill by burning down Uganda House in Nairobi on June 25, 2024.

“The Committee proposed that the Government of Uganda should pursue compensation from the government of Kenya for the destruction of Uganda House Nairobi during the riots in Nairobi,” said Achia, on Monday.

By the time the protesters set fire to Uganda House, it had been renovated and was about to reopen.

Following the incident, Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary Vincent Bagiire Waiswa stated that Kenya-Uganda relations “remain strong.”

“While we regret the incident that resulted in the property’s destruction, we commend the Nairobi Fire Department for putting out the fire.”

Under President William Ruto, Kenya and Uganda, led by President Museveni Yoweri, are not “on bad terms.”

The two leaders “share ideas” on both political and economic issues.

With the Parliament’s recommendation, it is unclear whether Uganda will confront its neighbor head on.
