Concerns have grown over the health of opposition leaders Dr Kizza Besigye and Erias Lukwago after the two were reportedly transferred from prison to medical facilities following a deterioration in their conditions.

The People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) said Besigye was moved from Luzira Maximum Security Prison to the Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC) Hospital on Friday night after his health reportedly worsened.

In a statement, the opposition group said the former presidential candidate had experienced a serious decline in his health and required urgent medical attention.

“Following a rapid and severe deterioration in his health condition, Dr Kizza Besigye was on Friday night moved from Luzira Maximum Security Prison to the Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC) Hospital,” PFF stated.

The party said Besigye remained in a fragile condition and needed specialized care that could not be sufficiently provided within the prison environment.

PFF also raised concern over the health of its Executive Chairman, Counsel Erias Lukwago, saying he was later transferred from Murchison Bay Prison to an undisclosed medical facility.

According to the group, Lukwago’s condition had worsened, forcing authorities to move him for medical attention.

“Today, our Executive Chairman, Counsel Erias Lukwago, has abruptly been rushed out of Murchison Bay Prison to a medical facility after his health critically worsened,” the statement read.

The opposition party said it was still trying to establish Lukwago’s exact location and receive more details about his medical condition.

The developments have increased pressure from opposition supporters who are demanding better healthcare access for the detained leaders.

PFF accused state authorities and the judiciary of failing to respond to previous requests for medical bail, saying the applications highlighted the leaders’ age and health concerns.

The party argued that continued detention could put the lives and wellbeing of the two senior opposition figures at risk.

“The lives, safety and physical well-being of our leaders rest entirely in the hands of the State,” PFF said.

The opposition group has called for Besigye and Lukwago to receive immediate specialized treatment and to be released without conditions.

However, specific details about the medical challenges affecting both leaders have not been publicly released.

The health concerns come as both men remain in custody over separate charges connected to allegations brought against them.

Besigye is facing accusations related to alleged plans to overthrow the government, while Lukwago faces accusations of failing to report information about the alleged plot.
