Kwania residents trained in managing the estates of deceased persons

Over 100 residents in the Kwania district have received training on different laws related to managing the estates of deceased persons.

The Uganda Law Reform Commission conducted the training which took place at the Mayor’s Garden in Aduku town council, Kwania.

It was attended by cultural leaders, widows, and various LC1 officials who were taken through pre-planning for estate management, the Succession Act, the Adoption of Children Act, the Custody and Maintenance of Children Act, and the Guardianship of Children Act.

Senior Sociologist at the Commission Jean Francis Adongo, stated that their objective is to equip the public with knowledge regarding property rights and guide them on educating others about different matters without breaking the law.

Adongo further cautioned cultural leaders against rushed property division and intermeddling with the estates of the deceased, which violates the law.

Ceaser Obada, the Assistant Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Kwania, noted that the training will open the eyes of the public regarding succession laws.

He emphasised that disputes often arise over letters of administration, which grant authority over a deceased person’s property.

Geoffrey Oyugi and Susan Akoli, residents of Aduku town council, joyfully welcomed the training.

They committed to sensitising their fellow residents using the knowledge and materials they received.

Kwania and Alebtong are among the 122 districts in Uganda receiving this training through a consultation process regarding succession and inheritance laws.
