Akia-Alebtong road: Sino truck kills two in hit-and-run incident

Akia, Lira | The territorial Police at Lira City Central Police Station is investigating a fatal hit-and-run road traffic crash that occurred on Wednesday, January 2026 at about 4 pm at Akia trading centre along the Lira–Alebtong road.

Preliminary investigations, according to SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, PRO for North Kyoga Region, an unidentified motor vehicle, alleged to be a maroon-coloured Sino truck whose registration number is yet to be established, was traveling from Lira City towards Alebtong.

Upon reaching Akia trading centre, the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, crossed to the opposite lane, and collided head-on with a motorcycle, registration number UET 193S, Bajaj Boxer, red in colour.

The motorcyclist was coming from the Alebtong side heading towards Lira City.

As a result of the collision, the rider and his passenger, whose identities have not yet been established, died on the spot.

Police officers led by No. 37340 Corporal Ituti Teddy, assisted by Corporal Nansubuga, promptly visited and documented the scene.

“The bodies of the deceased were conveyed to Lira Regional Referral Hospital mortuary pending postmortem examinations,” SP Okema said.

The involved motorcycle has been towed and parked at Lira City CPS for further inspection, while the offending motor vehicle fled the scene and is still at large.

Inquiries to trace and apprehend the driver of the suspected motor vehicle have commenced.

“The Police appeal to members of the public with any information that may lead to the identification or arrest of the driver of the maroon Sino truck to report to the nearest police station or Lira City CPS,” he appealed.

Further updates will be communicated as investigations progress, SP Okema promises.

Uganda loses 14 people daily to road crashes, according to police annual crime report released last year.

The East African country is a leader in the region as it battles to find solutions to reduce the deadly road crash statistics.
