President Museveni, also President-elect: 2026-2031, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, has appointed Justice Flavian Zeija, Chief Justice of Uganda.
Justice Zeija succeeds Alfonse Owiny Dollo who retired as Chief Justice on January 18.
The new Chief Justice was Dollo’s deputy since February 7, 2025, and acting Chief Justice from January 18 until his vetting for a top job by parliament was approved.
Zeija appeared before the Parliamentary Committee on Presidential Appointees on Thursday, January 22.
A few hours later, State House confirmed his appointment by the President in a statement.
In a statement, the State House said the President, in exercise of the powers vested in him by Article 142(1) of the 1995 Constitution, and acting on the advice of the Judicial Service Commission, appointed Justice Flavian Zeija.
He’s 57 on February 18, 2026.
The new Chief Justice will oversee the 2026 Presidential Election petition which has already been filed in the Supreme Court following the January 17 declaration by Justice Simon Byakagaba Mugenyi, the Chairman of the Electoral Commission, that Museveni won with 71%.
