Lamwo | Minister for Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees, Hilary Onek Obaloker—who also doubles as the Member of Parliament for Palabek County and is seeking re-election in 2026—has donated shs12 million to boost Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) in Cubu Parish, Palabek Abera sub-county.
The contribution was announced during a community engagement meeting that drew hundreds of residents, local leaders, and VSLA members. The gathering provided a platform for the minister to discuss development challenges affecting the area.
Minister Onek said the financial support is intended to strengthen household incomes and enhance the economic independence of rural families. He emphasized that VSLAs remain a proven avenue for improving livelihoods through savings, small loans, and collective investment.
He urged the beneficiaries to manage the funds transparently and ensure the support translates into visible improvements in their economic well-being.
“Our people are hardworking, but many lack the capital to start or expand small businesses. This support will empower the groups to grow their savings and multiply income opportunities so families can live better lives,” Onek said.
Patrick Ocira, a VSLA leader, welcomed the donation, describing it as timely support for rural households grappling with poverty, limited access to credit, and the rising cost of living.
Grace Atim, a resident and VSLA member, said the contribution will elevate the lending capacity of the groups, especially benefiting women and youth who rely on small enterprises for survival.
“Most of us depend on these savings groups for capital. This support will go a long way in boosting our economic activities,” she noted.
Palabek Abera sub-county chairperson, Patrick Okot, applauded Minister Onek for maintaining close contact with grassroots communities and consistently responding to local development needs. He said the funds demonstrate the minister’s commitment to improving financial inclusion and economic stability in the county.
Minister Onek also encouraged residents to uphold unity and prioritize development over political divisions as the election season gains momentum.
The donation comes at a time when campaigns are intensifying, with several aspirants—including independent candidates Odongkara Geoffrey Obalim, Ocen Felix Anthony, and Data Stephen Freshood—actively mobilizing support across Palabek County.
VSLA groups in Cubu Parish are expected to allocate the funds to members in the coming weeks based on internal guidelines, with a focus on supporting small-scale enterprises, agriculture, and household economic activities.
