Mandazi seller arrested over alleged rape in Jinja

Police in Jinja have arrested a mandazi seller, identified as Joram Dewa, 48, a resident of Wanyange Lake, for allegedly committing rape.

The incident reportedly occurred on November 4, 2025, around 9:00 p.m. near the railway line in Budhumbuli-Bugembe, Jinja City.

According to police, the suspect approached the victim on her way home and threatened to kill her if she refused to comply. Dewa then allegedly performed the unlawful sexual act.

For protection and confidentiality, the victim’s identity has been withheld.

Demonstrating courage and determination to end the culture of silence surrounding sexual violence, the victim reported the case at Kakira Main Police Station.

She was able to identify the suspect, leading police to swiftly arrest him.

Dewa has since been charged and detained as prosecution-guided investigations continue. Police confirmed that the suspect has undergone a medical examination and was found to be of sound mind.

He reportedly confessed to being fully aware of his actions.

A specialized team from the Kiira Regional Child and Family Protection Unit, led by SP Agnes Nampijja, has taken over the victim’s case.

The team is providing counselling and support to help her feel safe, understood, and empowered throughout the process.

SP James Mubi, Kiira police Public relations officer says Kiira Regional Police Command is fully committed to protecting victims of gender-based violence and violence against children through timely arrests, prosecution, and continuous community sensitization campaigns.
