Kumi | The territorial police of Kumi district have launched an investigation into the tragic death of a minor at Auruku Ominai Primary School in Ogoma sub-county.
The incident, which involved two juveniles, occurred on June 26 at around 12:50 p.m.
Jane Titin, a 14-year-old female from the Atesot tribe and a primary five pupil from Nyero in Kumi, was playing in class when a disagreement turned violent.
According to eyewitnesses, Ivan Etiang, 13, from the same area, allegedly struck Jane and caused her to collapse.
The school’s headteacher intervened after being notified, and Jane was rushed to Nyero Health Centre, where she was pronounced dead by medical staff.
A murder case was subsequently filed at CPS Kumi under CRB:394/2024.
When her relatives learned of her death, they reacted emotionally, allegedly attacking the suspect’s family.
They looted several animals, including goats, sheep, and cows, and set fire to several temporary and semi-permanent buildings.
Edison Obukulem, the East Kyoga Police PRO, confirmed Etiang’s arrest. By Thursday evening, he was still being held at CPS Kumi as investigations continued.
The deceased’s body was transferred to the Atutur Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.
“We urge the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands,” cautioned Obukulem.
