Embattled UPC party president Jimmy James Michael Akena has “summoned” an emergency UPC presidential press address for Tuesday at 2 pm.
On Monday, news broke that Akena, earlier highly regarded to run for the presidential election in 2026, would not be nominated.
His nomination fell off due to UPC party irregularities as cited by the Electoral Commission chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi.
Justice Mugenyi, in his observations following the presentations of Akena and Edim Enap as UPC flag bearers for president, said Akena’s term as UPC party president ended on August 31, 2025, and that his reelection for a third term was “illegal, null and void.”

The move to legally stop Akena from being nominated to run for president has caused debates across the country, with tension seeming to be boiling over at the UPC party.
In a statement issued on Tuesday to members of the press on behalf of the management, Muzeyi Faizo, head of media and communications at UPC, invited “all media houses” that the “UPC President Hon. Akena James Micheal Jimmy will address a press conference at 2 p.m. at Party Headquarters Uganda House, 6th floor.”
