EC urges Ugandans to take part in electoral roadmap ahead of 2026

Kampala | The Uganda Electoral Commission (EC) has urged the entire country to participate actively in the crucial activities preceding the general elections scheduled for 2026.

During a press briefing at the Commission’s headquarters in Kampala, EC spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi, representing Commission Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama, announced the start of the national voters’ register update.

The exercise is set to begin on January 20, 2025. Mucunguzi emphasized the importance of the country’s adequate preparation for the upcoming electoral process.

He stressed the importance of voter registration in ensuring a credible, transparent, and fair election.

“An accurate and clean voters’ register is fundamental to ensuring a fair electoral process,” he stressed, calling upon all eligible Ugandans to take part in this crucial activity as part of the electoral framework.

Furthermore, the EC emphasized that updating the voters’ register is a major undertaking that requires widespread public participation. “This is a vital component of the roadmap for credible elections, and we encourage all Ugandans to get involved,” Mucunguzi remarked.

Additionally, the spokesperson urged Ugandans to participate peacefully in the electoral process while adhering to legal standards and the Commission’s guidelines.

“We request that all Ugandans conduct themselves with respect for one another and the law during these activities,” he stated. Our aim is to uphold unity, peace, and stability as we approach the general elections.”

As the election period for 2025-2026 approaches, the Commission emphasizes the importance of conducting a peaceful, lawful, and inclusive electoral process. This is essential to guarantee that every Ugandan can exercise their right to vote in an environment characterized by tranquility and respect.

Recently, the Electoral Commission announced a revision to the schedule for updating the national voters’ register, which was originally set to occur from January 3 to January 24, 2025.

The update will now begin on January 20, 2025, and will conclude on February 10, 2025.

Justice Simon Byabakama, the Commission chairperson, clarified that this postponement was necessary to ensure that all logistical and administrative arrangements are adequately prepared for a seamless and inclusive process.

“This modification enables us to guarantee readiness at all levels and to provide every eligible citizen with the opportunity to participate effectively,” Byabakama stated.

The update will be conducted daily, including weekends, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at designated update centers throughout the country.

This initiative aims to register Ugandan citizens aged 18 and older who have not yet been included in the voters’ register.

It will facilitate registered voters in transferring to new polling stations, verifying and updating their information, and allowing students who have recently turned 18 to register and be assigned polling stations within their respective parishes of residence or origin.
