Presidential candidate Museveni: The GDP of Uganda has doubled

Museveni

At 10:14am on Tuesday, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni was duly nominated as a candidate to run for the 7th term in the 2026 presidential elections.

Museveni, 81, took power in 1986 and in 1996 got constitutionally elected. In what appears to be his last term, Museveni is seeking reelection under the theme “Protecting the Gains.”

Through his NRM party, Museveni managed to generate over 2 million signatures in support of his nomination.

Speaking shortly after being duly nominated by the Electoral Commission chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi, Museveni thanked the NRM members for entrusting and electing him as the NRM Presidential flag bearer for the 2026-2031 term.

He added: “In this economy, the GDP of Uganda has doubled currently in the recent Kisanja from $34 billion to $66 billion. You have everything today that you lacked in the past: electricity, roads, telephones, manpower, the educated people, and peace.”

The above, he said, is “why we are being flooded by many investors because they are looking for a peaceful and profitable area where to invest.”

At least five aspiring candidates have been cleared to run for the presidency.
