Kitgum municipality, established in 2016 from the heart of Acholi, stands as a beacon of unity, resilience, and pride, with vibrant streets lined with streetlights and a growing tarmac road network.
In this town where the winds carry stories of hope and the soil grows more than sorghum, lives a man who embodies its spirit: Denis Onekalit Amere.
Born and raised in Kitgum, Amere’s story is not one of privilege but perseverance. He came from a humble background, where his parents struggled with unstable incomes, making his journey through education a test of endurance.
Despite his intelligence and leadership potential, job opportunities eluded him after university. But instead of giving up, he created his own path as an entrepreneur before becoming a parliamentarian.
Elected in 2021 under the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Amere has since served as Member of Parliament for Kitgum Municipality.
As he seeks re-election in the upcoming 2026 general elections, his campaign slogan, “A dreamer knows how to fulfil his dream,” captures both his life journey and his vision for Kitgum municipality’s future.
A pledge to tackle unemployment and empower communities
Amere has made it clear that his next term will focus squarely on youth employment, women empowerment, and creating economic opportunities that resonate with grassroots needs.
“The biggest challenge in Kitgum municipality is youth unemployment. My next term will be about skills, innovation, and small business support,” he said during a recent rally at Kitgum bus park.

Voices from the voters
Among residents, reactions to Amere’s re-election bid are largely positive, especially among youth and women who have felt the weight of unemployment and economic exclusion.
“He understands us because he has been where we are,” said Julius Okello, a boda-boda rider. “When he talks about hustling to survive, we know it’s real. I’m not saying that he is 100% but he is one of us.”
Beatrice Akello, a market vendor, echoed that sentiment. “He helped us access small grants through women’s groups. If given another term, I believe he will do even more.”
For Grace Atim, a youth leader and graduate teacher still searching for a job, Amere’s message hits home. “What inspires me is that he didn’t wait for government jobs; he created his own. I think he can help us do the same.”
Yet others call on him to go even further:
“We want more visibility in Parliament and better lobbying for Kitgum projects,” said Patrick Oryem, a local businessman. “He has the brain. Now we want him to use it more for infrastructure and trade.”
A symbol of resilience and hope
Many in Kitgum regard Hon. Amere was more than a politician. He’s seen as a reflection of their struggles and aspirations, a young man who turned hardship into a launching pad for leadership.
As the campaign season unfolds, Amere continues to gain traction, not through grand promises, but through lived experience and a vision rooted in the realities of the people he serves.
Kitgum municipality may be young, but with leaders like Onekalit Denis Amere, its future looks determined and full of promise.
