The long-anticipated construction of a modern bus park in Kitgum municipality has officially commenced, beginning with the demolition of old structures on the site to pave way for the new development.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development under the Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development (USMID) program, is part of a broader effort to transform urban transport infrastructure in key municipalities across the country.

Kitgum municipality Mayor, Okwera Richard Ojara, expressed excitement over the project’s launch, describing it as a major milestone in the town’s journey toward modernization and improved service delivery.

“This is a historic moment for Kitgum. For years, we’ve envisioned a bus park that matches our growing urban status. Today, we are witnessing the beginning of that dream coming true. This project will improve not only transportation but also the general image and economic prospects of our municipality,” said Mayor Okwera.

The construction of the modern bus park is expected to include features such as spacious parking bays, passenger waiting areas, loading and unloading zones, proper sanitation facilities, and organized taxi and bus stages.

Local leaders and residents have hailed the move, saying it will help decongest the town, improve road safety, and create more orderly transportation services.

Okello Christine, a businesswoman who has been operating a kiosk near the old bus park area, welcomed the development.

“Though we’ve been asked to relocate temporarily, we’re happy that Kitgum is finally getting a proper bus park. It will attract more travelers and help our businesses grow,” she said.

Olanya Patrick, a bodaboda rider at Kitgum stage, noted the importance of the bus park to his work.

“Right now, the area is always chaotic with buses parking anywhere. A modern park will organize everything and make it easier for us to operate safely and efficiently,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Kitgum municipal engineer, Abonga Alexis, said the contractor has already been mobilized and ground works have started in earnest.

“We have cleared all initial obstacles and compensation processes have been concluded. Demolition is ongoing and we expect actual construction to commence shortly. We are committed to ensuring the works are done on time and with quality,” Eng. Abonga added.

The project is expected to be completed within a 12 to 18-month timeline, depending on weather and logistical factors.

Once completed, the Kitgum bus park is anticipated to serve as a regional transport hub, linking northern Uganda to major towns and boosting local trade, tourism, and mobility.
