On June 3, 2025, Lamwo district officially began construction of a 10-kilometer first-class marram road linking Aceba sub-county headquarters to Lagwel in Padibe West sub-county.

With a budget of shs70 million, the project is part of the National Oilseeds Project (NOSP) and intends to strengthen rural connectivity, facilitate the transportation of agricultural products, and boost local and regional economic growth.

The contract was awarded to FICA Engineering Company Limited, who is expected to complete the work in eight months.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Lamwo Resident District Commissioner, William Komakech, emphasized the importance of the road in transforming local livelihoods.

“This road will not only improve accessibility between Aceba and Padibe West but also enhance the movement of goods, especially agricultural produce like sunflower and Simsim, which are vital to our local economy,” he said.

RDC Komakech commended the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries and other partners under NOSP for supporting infrastructure development that directly benefits rural communities.

He urged the contractor to maintain quality standards and complete the project within the stipulated time frame.

The secretary of works and technical services for Lamwo district, Doris Abalo, noted that the road has been prioritized due to its economic and social significance.

“Farmers have long struggled to transport their harvests to markets due to poor road conditions, especially during the rainy seasons. This development will change that,” she said.

Local leaders and residents expressed joy and optimism about the project. Oyenya Alex, LC3 chairperson of Aceba sub-county, described the road as a long-awaited dream.

“For years, our people have been marginalized due to inaccessibility. This road brings hope not only for better transport but also for access to health services and schools,” he stated.

Community members echoed similar sentiments. Betty Auma, a farmer from Lagwel, said the road will make it easier to reach the market in Padibe town, especially during harvest time.

“We used to spend hours on foot or hire expensive transport. This road is a blessing,” she added.

The National Oilseeds Project is a government initiative aimed at supporting oilseed production and marketing, including infrastructure to enhance value chain development in selected districts.

NOSP is funded by different partners like IFAD and the government of Uganda – with MAAIF and ministry of local government co-implementing it.

The road construction works in Lamwo are expected to commence immediately, with monitoring teams from the district.

The community is urged to ensure transparency and accountability throughout the project’s implementation.
