By Dr. Morris Chris Ongom, Director – Chamber of Commerce, Lango Chapter
For decades, Lango has produced some of Uganda’s most resilient entrepreneurs, brilliant innovators, and resourceful traders.
Yet, when it comes to shaping the political direction of our region, the business class remains largely on the sidelines. This must change.
The false separation between politics and business is costing our region opportunities, voice, and influence. The truth is simple: you cannot build sustainable prosperity while remaining absent from the political decisions that shape your business environment.
As business elites, we deal in solutions, sustainability, and strategy. We know how to build enterprises, manage risks, and create jobs.
So why are we allowing our political space to be dominated by short-term populism, transactional leadership, and cycles of empty promises?
If we truly care about the growth of our businesses, the quality of infrastructure, the empowerment of our youth and women, the competitiveness of Lango’s agriculture, and access to regional markets—we must get involved. Not later. Now.
Here’s why:
Policy shapes enterprise growth: Tax regimes, road networks, access to energy, and trade policies are all political decisions. Business thrives when good policies exist. But good policies only come when smart, visionary people help shape them.
Leadership needs a new mindset: The political future of Lango cannot be left to career politicians alone. We need leaders who understand budgets, growth strategies, digital innovation, and global markets—skills the business community already possesses.
Economic empowerment is political: The transformation we desire in Lango—industrial parks, airport, export zones, agro-processing centers, tourism hubs—won’t happen without deliberate political will and strategic economic planning. Who can better lead this than those already creating value?
Business must mentor governance: Our youth are watching. They need to see that success is not either political or entrepreneurial—but a blend of responsible leadership that uplifts community while building sustainable wealth.
A call to business community to take courage and shape regional politics.
This is a call—not to abandon business for politics—but to integrate business wisdom into our political destiny. Step up. Speak out. Shape policy. Support visionary leaders. Or better still, become one.
Lango cannot afford a future where its brightest minds remain silent while decisions are made that affect us all. We need you—our business champions—to be part of this leadership shift.
The future belongs to regions that align wealth creation with visionary politics. Let Lango lead the way.
