Amolatar man, 42, always mocked for failing to marry, commits suicide

Police in the Amolatar district say they have received a sad report of Opolot Thomas’ suicide by hanging.

The incident occurred between April 10 and 11, 2025, at an unknown time in Nakituba “A” village, Muntu parish, Muntu sub-county, Amolatar.

Opolot Thomas was fine on April 10, 2025. He was drinking in Muntu town centre.

In a statement issued on Friday, North Kyoga Region Police PRO SP Jimmy Patrick Okema stated that while at the drinking establishment, Opolot repeatedly stated that he intended to commit suicide.

Why? People always make fun of him for not having a wife. According to records, the now-deceased had relationships with two different women before they split up.

SP Okema said that when he returned home around 7 p.m., he kept promising to commit suicide. “His brother, Olobo, followed him home and found him still drinking more alcohol and carrying a rope.”

“The brother removed the rope and informed the father but they took it lightly.”

On April 11, 2025, at around 6 p.m., Opolot was discovered hanging from a mango tree 8 meters away.

Police were notified, and a suicide report was filed at Muntu Police Station. The crime scene was visited and thoroughly documented by the SOCO.

A piece of cloth suspected of being used by the deceased was discovered at the scene, and the rope previously recovered from the deceased was also recovered from the father and displayed.

The body was handed over to the relatives upon their request, and their statements were recorded.

“This is really very unfortunate,” SP Okema said, adding, “We have had a series of suicide reports, but we appeal to those who want to end their lives; think.”
