‘Hail Mary’ as Magdalene wins the USSSA Lango zonal championships

The St. Mary Magdalene girls’ team has been crowned USSSA champions for the Lango sub-region in 2025.

The thrilling match in the finals, played on Saturday at the Ambalal Primary School playground, ended 1-1 in regular time.

Acaba SS’s Akullu Dinah scored first, and St Mary Magdalene’s Mary Alaro equalized.

Ruth Amongi, goalkeeper for St. Mary Magdalene, performed admirably in the penalty shootout, making clinical saves.

Marita Awor of Acaba SS missed the first penalty kick, setting the tone for St. Mary Magdalene’s 3-1 victory.

Acaba SS was the only team to hold St. Mary Magdalene to a goalless draw in regular time, despite the latter’s impressive goal-scoring record throughout the tournament.

They had previously thrashed St. Catherine 10-0 and Apac SS 9-0, showcasing their offensive abilities.

The final outcome emphasizes St. Mary Magdalene’s determination and skill, while also recognizing Acaba SS’s defensive resilience.

The penalty shootout victory capped off an exciting tournament, with St. Mary Magdalene taking the title.

Mentor SS retained their Lango USSSA zonal championship title in the Boys’ category, defeating Wisdom High School 1-0 in a heated final on Saturday at Ambalal Primary playground.

Ebal Junior scored an important goal early in the game with a converted free kick.

The team played intense, fast-paced games that demonstrated their tactical prowess, and used strategic plays, such as converted free kicks, to score important goals in prior matches.

The only goal scored early on proved to be the deciding factor, allowing Mentor SS to hold on and secure the victory.

Their ability to capitalize on set-piece opportunities while defending effectively was critical to their success.

  • Opio Emmanuel from Mentor SS got the golden boot with 11 goals.
  • Best coach of the tournament was Ronald Okello for Mentor SS team.
  • Alaro Mary of St Mary Magdalene became the top scorer with 17 goals.

Lango zone has produced five teams for the national championships, which will be held in Ngora for boys and at Bukedea Comprehensive for girls.

Mentor SS, Wisdom High School, and Lira Town College will represent Lango as boys’ teams.

St Mary Magdalene, the champions, and Acaba Secondary School will represent the girls in Bukedea.
