Oyam: Agriculture, education, and roads top Jane Acilo’s agenda

Jane Frances Acilo has identified key challenges for the people of Oyam district as she prepares to seek their political mandate ahead of 2026.

Acilo, a farmer and philanthropist, has expressed interest in representing Oyam district women in the 12th Parliament.

In her political quest, she believes agriculture, education, and road access throughout Oyam should be improved.

In terms of education, she plans to support the school feeding program in an effort to keep learners in school and improve educational quality.

She has asked that in order to maintain the feeding program, the district’s schools set up “school gardens.” Acilo pledges his support for these gardens.

The MP hopeful has also distributed mattresses and boxes to the best PLE stars of 2024. During the handover, she urged the schools to have two hectares of farmland and promised to provide seeds.

“If this is implemented, learners will not struggle in school and will perform better,” Jane stated. “Poverty in Oyam can be eradicated through a focused mission to eliminate it.”

She has promised to help farmers in the district produce bumper harvests that will provide them with enough money to improve their households.

The rate of commercial farming in Oyam, she says, has decreased due to no better market for agricultural produce.

Acilo, speaking to farmer groups, civil servants, and NRM party leaders in Myene sub-county, stated that she has a vision to change how people practice agriculture.

“What is making people wealthy around the world is commercial agriculture, not farming for the stomach,” she told the Myene gathering.

She went on to say that agriculture produces almost everything for export, and that the most important things for farmers are to prepare their gardens well, to choose high-yielding crops, to weed properly, and to practice post-harvest.

She is dissatisfied with agricultural practices that result in a farmer receiving nothing at the end of the season.

Meanwhile, Acilo has launched road rehabilitations in the district to improve access to schools, health centres, markets and houses of worship.
