Lira farmer groups get hybrid piglets from MP Auma to boost income

Lira |Eighteen farmer groups in Lira district have been provided with hybrid pigs(lets) by the woman MP Linda Agnes Auma.

Each group received five hybrid piglets, which will be distributed to members on a rotating basis each year.

The distribution to the recipients was supervised by Bonny Omara, the LC5 vice chairperson of Lira, who underlined that this project will empower locals and increase their participation in wealth creation.

He noted that hybrid piglets, specifically land-drace and large white breeds, are ideal for commercial farming due to their rapid growth.

MP Auma

Serina Apio Otim, a beneficiary from Ayami sub-county, thanked MP Auma for her advocacy for various farmer groups.

“I would like to extend my thanks to Linda Auma for her continuous support. I am delighted to have received this pig.

“Recently, she provided us with a poultry project, and we are very appreciative of her efforts,” Apio Otim said.

Boniface Okello Omara, a veterinary officer and deputy speaker of Lira district council, stated that the beneficiaries were trained in piggery management prior to receiving the piglets.

In April 2024, MP Auma also distributed 14,000 kuroiler chicks worth shs35 million to 70 farmer groups in the district.

The distribution of kuroiler chicks, an improved breed of chicken, is part of her larger initiatives to alleviate poverty among local residents through the promotion of commercial farming.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has frequently emphasised commercial farming in his address and wealth creation nationwide tours.
